LK Advani quits top BJP posts
New Delhi: In a move that is seen to divide BJP, L.K. Advani has quit all top posts in the party.
In his resignation letter addressed to party president Rajnath Singh, Advani said that he was quitting from the party’s National Executive, Parliamentary Board and Election Committee.
“All my life I have found working for the BJP and Sangh a matter of great pride and satisfaction. I no longer have the feeling that this is the same idealistic party it once used to be,” he said in the letter.
However, Rajnath Singh has rejected the resignation and has requested Advani to reconsider his decision.
85-year-old Advani, a founder member of the BJP and considered the party patriarch after Atal Bihari Vajpayee, rued that the leaders of BJP were concerned with personal agendas only.
"Most leaders of ours are now concerned just with their personal agendas," Advani said in his one-page resignation.
The reason, many believe, is Narendra Modi’s elevation in the election committee. Advani had stayed away from the BJP's National Executive meeting where Modi was elevated to the post of chairman of the election committee of the party on Sunday.
Advani remains a primary member of the BJP and is still the chairman of the NDA which is an alliance of BJP, JD(U), Shiv Sena and other regional parties.
Known as the BJP patriarch, L.K. Advani led the party to its rise along with former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Advani was the Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister during NDA's rule from 1999 to 2004.
