School bus catches fire in Hyderabad, miraculous escape for students

Fifty students of Sputnika International School had a miraculous escape when their bus heading for school was completely gutted at Batasingaram of Hayathnagar on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Thursday morning.

No student was injured in the fire accident. But the incident left the students, their parents and school teachers panicked.

Sparks flew in the rear side of the running bus, headed for the school located in Vanasthalipuram, as it crossed Batasingaram around 8.15 a.m.

“Even as the scared students shouted to stop the bus pointing to the sparks, smoke began to fill inside the bus,” the Hayathnagar Inspector G. Srinivas Kumar told The Hindu.

Alerted by the cries of the students, driver Srinivas Goud halted the bus on roadside. By then, flames erupted in the bus triggering a stampede-like situation inside as students rushed towards the door. The driver helped the students come out by pulling them one after the other.

“Fortunately, all of them came out safely before the blazes engulfed the entire bus,” the Inspector said. Commuters and passers-by too came to the rescue of the students.

Fire tenders were called and the flames were doused. “I just dashed to the spot on my bike on hearing about the fire in the bus and thank god everyone is safe,” said a parent.
